Odessa High jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Permian's Black team at McCanlies Field. In the fourth inning, the Panthers tied the scrimmage and then took an 8-5 lead. It is apparent that Permian will bring a marked more productive bat to the plate this season. That's something that was suspect last season. Mojo left a lot of runners on base, which I took as a good thing... being it meant we were putting the bat on the ball.
The Mojo pitching staff had a couple of lapses early, but rebounded and finished strong - particularly in the 4th and 5th innings. Permian's defensive glove seems to have elevated. The shortstop and third baseman made nice plays on a couple of sharp hit line drives. A couple of fly balls to the outfielders accented their speed out there. I was impressed at the arm strength that the right fielder displayed on one of the Bronchos' hits to the outfield.
Over at Coleman Field on the Odessa High campus, JV White were scrimmaging OHS. We had some athletes perform well on the mound. Defensively, the Panthers did fairly well in the field. Both teams struggled somewhat at the plate. Permian may need to spend a little more time in the batting cage before the district games begin. Both JV teams will travel to Hobbs, New Mexico this Saturday.
