Mojo Suffers Self Inflicted Loss To Frenship
Friday, April 13, 2018 09:12

ODESSA - When you combine five errors, low production at the plate, and several missed opportunities, you know the result is probably not going to be good. That was the case on Friday as Permian let Frenship claim a 9-6 district win at McCanlies Field.

villaThe Tigers scored in every inning and hit a homerun to start the game in the opening frame. They hit a total of three homeruns to right field with the assistance of a steady 30 mph wind in the same direction.

Permian answered with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, but could have easily scored more. The Panthers tied the game 1-1, aided by four consecutive walks. Six Mojo batters got on base courtesy of base on balls in the inning, and another was hit by a pitch. Permian sent all nine of it batters to the plate, but the inning ended with two runners left in scoring position.

It wasn't until the sixth inning that the Panthers were able to add a run to their tally. Trailing 7-3, Aleck Villa led off with a double to centerfield. After a strikeout and groundout, Christian Tschauner sent another hard hit ball to centerfield to plate Villa to cut the deficit to three runs at 7-4.

Mental mistakes and errors plagued Permian most of the day. The Tigers added two more runs in the top of the seventh to make it a 9-4 ballgame.  In their last at-bat, the Panthers matched the pair of runs on a Taylor Sullivan sacrifice ground out and RBI single by Villa, who finished the game batting two-for-three.

Mojo was limited to four hits for the day, while Frenship scored the nine runs on nine hits.  The Panthers committing five fielding errors, and Seth Higdon absorbed the loss on the mound.  He recorded eight strikeouts.  The defensive glove has got to improve.

After the 9-6 loss, Permian will try to redeem themselves with a rematch game on the road Saturday afternoon in Wolfforth. The Panthers can compete with and beat any team in this district... provided they cut down the errors and mental mistakes.  More quality at-bats against Odessa High and Amarillo Tascosa would also increase their chances of seeing post-season.
